A hilarious film, released in 2002, inspires this particularly fine comedy drama. Bend It like Beckham is the story of the 18-year-old daughter of Punjabi Sikhs who is crazy about football. But, because she's a girl, her parents have refused to let her play the beautiful game. The rebellious Jesminder, AKA Jess, secretly joins a talented local women's football team and they eventually play their way to the top of the league.
What happens next? You'll have to wait and see.
The movie, while hilariously funny, also included important messages about people's right to challenge homophobia and the role of women in society today. And it went on to break box office records in India too, fast becoming the highest-grossing Indian-themed film in the USA... ever.
If you love nothing better than a feel-good, laugh-out-loud comedy drama, you'll love this stage version of the film, set to wow audiences all over again in 2015. We imagine David Beckham, footie genius and gentleman, is very proud to lend his name to such a wonderful production, an unforgettable peek into Britain's multi-cultural society and an intimate look at the astonishing power of the world's favourite game.
